2002 nissan frontier review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Frontier was redesigned for 2001. For 2002, the model line includes 19 configurations. lineuptwo body styles are available, king cab and crew cab. Each is available in three trim levels: xe, se and sc. Desert runner 4x2 v6 models are also available. king cabs offer front bucket seats and additional seating for two passengers in fold-down rear jump seats. King cab beds are 74. 6 inches long (6 feet, 2. 6 inches). crew cab long bed models are the biggest news for 2002. All crew cabs use the 3. 3-liter sohc v6 engine, with the sc having the factory-installed supercharger made by eaton, a company with a lengthy history designing and building superchargers. desert runner models are also available. Essentially a 4x2 king cab v6, a desert runner is modeled after specially prepared off-road race trucks used to pre-run baja and other big desert races. Desert runners are two-wheel drive, but feature the same heavy-duty chassis, ride height and stance as the rugged frontier 4x4 models. At roughly 500 pounds lighter than a 4x4 frontier king cab v6, desert runners offer the best power-to-weight ratio of any frontier pickup. Special badges distinguish desert runner models, which are available in xe, se, and s/c models. The base model comes with 15-inch wheels. The big bold front end and fender flares offer a sporty industrial look, a cross between a power tool and a boxing glove. This truck won't go unnoticed like the bland toyota tacoma. the powerful look begins in the body-colored grille, which incorporates a faux bash guard made of tough plastic, an original design. The hoodline is tall, the clear halogen headlights and round maxima foglights are oversized, and the turn signals goggle-like. The large fender flares with integral mud flaps span radial wheel arches, and have a finish that's deliberately duller than the body. They're attached by prominent tabs that look like bolt heads, which cause people to walk up and see if they twist. There's something right about any design feature that draws people to touch it. at the back, a new tailgate cover comes standard with a tailgate lock; the lock is designed to keep the tailgate itself from being stolen, not what's in the bed. Because tailgates get smashed so easily the demand for them is high, which keeps thieves busy; the lock should slow them down at least. The supercharged s/c, either 2wd or 4wd, is planted to the ground with tires that are both tall and wide, p265/55r17. crew cab long beds are 74. 6 inches long (6 feet, 2. 6 inches), just like the standard-length bed on the frontier king cab models. Crew cab short beds are about 20 inches shorter than standard six-foot frontier beds. The crew cab short bed holds just 33 cubic feet of cargo space, compared with 44. 1 cubic feet for the remaining models. about 16 inches of bed length can be gained on any of them with an optional bed extender, a hinged aluminum rack that effortlessly flips back 180 degrees to frame the end of the lowered tailgate. Flip the bed extender forward, close the tailgate, and it provides a contained area for groceries or other small cargo. Unlike a solid tailgate, however, the bed extender won't hold back dirt or anything that can slip between the aluminum tubes. on the roof is a beefy tubular rack, first featured on the xterra; it can be fitted with yakima attachments to carry skis, snowboards and mountain bikes. A bed-mounted bike rack is also available. the engine compartment is tidy and roomy, and everything looks well balanced and accessible. The instrument panel is striking with a two-tone titanium-colored background. At night the numbers illuminate, but because they're outlined in white instead of being bold, they're difficult to read. The tachometer stretches to 8000 rpm despite the engine's 4800 rpm power peak, with a redline beginning at 6000 and running in a big pointless streak to eight grand. The center dash and instrument panel is a big improvement over the silver plastic used last year, which looked like someone painted it with a can of spray paint. the cd changer holds six cds, which can be selected with the six radio station buttons. There are two cool buttons for the emergency flashers and rear window defogger, rectangular and totally flat on the face of the panel. The heater controls are three big switches with wings, easy to operate when wearing gloves. there are front and rear auxiliary dc outlets in addition to the cigarette lighter. Big fixed cup holders are provided front and rear; the front cup holders on the center console work well. There's another tray ideal for a cellphone forward of the shift lever. Three grab handles are provided for climbing in and out, and available running boards make the step up easy. Radio and cruise controls are located on the leather-wrapped steering wheel, with wide spokes located at 3, 9, 5 and 7 o'clock. The whole padded center is the horn, the best and safest operation because of quick access. the front seats are comfortable and supportive. Leather is available in the crew cab. The leather seats are truly excellent, however. Long trips are comfortable. short trips in the back seats of the crew cab are fine for adults, but long rides may leave them feeling confined. We wouldn't want to ride very far back there. The rear seat space is tight in terms of knee room, but there's good head room and elbow room. We've found children are comfortable in the back seat of the crew cab. It provides for the secure installation of a child safety seat, something that can't always be found in extended cabs. Bigger people find little legroom in back. Technically it's a five-seater, but don't count on it. Don't count on even two adults being comfortable for long in the back seat if they're taller than five-foot-two. Getting in and out of the back seat is awkward for adults as they have to swing their feet around the b-pillars behind the front seats. the rear and backseat windows are privacy glass, standard, with a rear window defogger. The optional flip-up sunroof ventilates, but doesn't fully open to the sky; it's covered from the inside with a removable headliner with plastic tabs. driving impressionnissan's frontier rides and handles very well, for a truck. It feels nimble in corners, and the steering is responsive. The front wheels stay glued to the road when cornering. Serious pickup with brilliant performance. introductionthe nissan titan delivers dazzling performance with a powerful 5. 6-liter v8 and responsive five-speed automatic. Its handling is equally responsive, making it among the most enjoyable of the full-size half-ton pickups. Brakes, suspension, drivetrain work together for quick response. It was the first truly full-size pickup in nearly 25 years from anyone other than the big three, and the first ever from a company whose world headquarters are located outside of north america. (the titan is significantly larger than the 2006 toyota tundra, which is about 7/8-size.) when designing the titan, nissan benchmarked the best pickups and decided to raise the bar. Titan would be big and roomy, and it would not be a shrinking violet in terms of styling or performance. As a result, the titan excels at roominess. There's lots of headroom up front and the back seats of crew cab models offer plenty of legroom. Its v8 engine generates strong torque; and there is no v6 or base motor. Titan can tow up to 9,500 pounds. Among them: a factory-applied spray-in bedliner, a c-channel tie-down system for securing cargo and accessories, and a stash box integrated into the driver's-side rear fender for storing a tow hitch or other small items. The rear doors on the king cab open nearly 180 degrees for quick access. A dampened tailgate assist reduces effort when opening and closing the tailgate. All titans are powered by nissan's 5. 6-liter v8 and five-speed automatic. All models are available in 2wd and 4wd. All are offered with flexible-fuel engines (ffv) for no additional cost. three trim levels are available: xe, se, and le. All come with a high level of standard equipment including a tire-pressure monitor, cruise control, tilt steering and a cd stereo. the xe 2wd king cab 23,250) comes with wind-up windows, manual door locks, cloth upholstery, a split front bench seat that has a fold-down armrest storage bin, a split pop-up rear seat, and 17-inch steel wheels. the se king cab 25,400) adds captain's chairs with a better grade of cloth, 18-inch aluminum wheels, power everything, and host of other features, including an audio package that can play mp3-formatted cds. A dvd-based navigation system 1,800) is optional. crew cab 2wd models include the xe 26,100), se 27,900), and le 32,700). Front bench seats are available as a credit option on se and le. Crew cab 4wd models are available in xe 29,300), se 31,100), and le 35,750) trim. options include a utility bed package with a clever channel system in the bed for flexible tie-down configurations to fit a wide range of cargo; a lockable storage system in the outside of the bed; tailgate lighting; a power point at the rear; and the factory-applied spray-in bedliner. an off-road package for 4wd models consists of a unique lower-ratio dana axle, switch-on-demand electronically activated locking rear differential, rancho performance gas shock absorbers, large all-terrain tires, fog lights, and skid plates for the radiator, oil pan and transfer case. The trac package 300) adds the locking differential to a 2wd xe or se. all models can be equipped with xm satellite radio 350). Se and le crew cabs are available with dvd entertainment 1450); le crew cabs can be ordered with a sunroof 900). the texas titan package 2,500), new for 2006, includes 18-inch chrome wheels, chrome step rails, fog lamps, factory spray-on bed liner, special finish dash accents, floor mats with the texas star, and a texas titan badge. safety features include optional front-seat side-impact air bags for torso protection and curtain air bags for head protection 850). Standard safety features on the 2006 titan include dual-stage front air bags with seat belt sensors and a front-passenger occupant classification sensor. In the rear are three-point outboard passenger seat belts and the latch (lower anchors and tether for children) child seat anchor system. Active front head restraints come standard on all models. Vdc electronic stability control is available 1,200), which helps the driver maintain control by reducing or eliminating skidding in corners. walkaroundthe nissan titan is boldly styled. Its blocky head-on view, with its twin sloping chrome bars angling down across a bee-comb radiator presents an intimidating appearance in rear-view mirrors, a look that's simple and direct, short of braggadocio. The rest of the nissan titan fulfills that impression: direct and shaped by function, a true truck. Big square-shaped fender flares give it a look of rugged sportiness. Lots of chrome up front adds to the boldness, heightened when combined with dark paint colors. the king cab's unique door design is a real light-bulb innovation. But the titan's rear door opens not just to the near 90 degrees that's expected; it swings farther yet, yawning 168 degrees, which is nearly flat against the truck's body. Wide-open nissan calls it, and it is. It's surprising how often this feature becomes useful. At the grocery store, it makes it much easier to maneuver a cart closely into position for unloading. Crew cabs have 5 1/2-foot beds, trading a foot of bed space for roomy rear seats and more interior cargo room. with their tailgates lowered, both bed sizes can accommodate 4x8-foot sheets of building material between their wheel housings. On 2wd titans the load height is about 34 inches, a big difference when loading heavy cargo. Higher may be better for displaying machismo, but lower is better when there's work to be done. nissan's sprayed-in bedliner looks terrific. The anti-skid surface keeps cargo from sliding around while driving and reduces noise. The anti-skid surface can make it harder to slide a box out, but this seems outweighed by the upsides. It prevents scratches and rust and, unlike plastic drop-in liners, it doesn't trap moisture underneath, again reducing the chance of rust. It's also covered by the truck's warranty. The coating is applied at a $2 million facility specifically built for this purpose at nissan's spanking-new truck factory in mississippi. the available c-channel tie-down system, part of the utility bed package, is designed to accommodate a variety of scenarios. It features c-section rails mounted in the bed: two on the floor, and one each on the side and forward walls. Removable cleats slide into the channels and can be positioned anywhere along its length, thus permitting customized securing of cargo. Sliding cargo trays, a sliding tool box and other modular storage units are available for kayaks, bikes, and other needs. The bed channels feature protective caps that slide on to keep out debris when they're not being used. It appears to be a great system. the storage compartment integrated into the left rear fender is convenient for storing a tow-hitch ball, work gloves, road flares, or a first aid kit. Measuring 11x15 inches, this small bedside compartment is double sealed to be weather and dust proof. It's roomy when measured in cubic feet, but it's also organized, with handy storage bins and spaces to tuck stuff away. two interior configurations are available. Standard on xe is a front bench seat with column shifter to accommodate up to six passengers. Se and le come with two front bucket seats (captain's chairs) and a gated floor shifter in a large center co.
